Very few designers can seamlessly combine grungy edginess with romantic sensibility and this is why the Valentino Rockstud Collection – launched at the house’s SS11 show in 2010 – became instantly iconic. The then designer duo, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, are credited with one of the biggest success stories in recent fashion history, which started with a chic and comfy studded low-heel slingback pump selling out till today and expanding in other shoe styles, purses and little accessories. In a world of fast fashion and trend fatigue, women are still crazy for these studded stunners.
The Roots of Success
Claire Danes was one of the first Hollywood A-listers who got noticed in them. Later an array of actresses rocked them on the red carpet and ‘it’ girls such as Alexa Chung, Olivia Palermo, and Nicky Hilton spread the word. Valentino Garavani’s glory has its roots in Rome in the early 60s. In 1999, while still at the helm, he hired Maria and Pierpaolo to create some statement accessories. A decade later, when the duo was promoted to his position, they did it!

The Ever-Expanding Range
The gem-shaped studs are landing on more and more styles. Most popular of all are the Rockstud Leather Pumps spotted on Eva Longoria, Sophia Vergara, Alessandra Ambrosio, and other fashionistas. The cage-shaped studded straps and stiletto heels are spicy & chic details to any look. Rockstud Flats are also popular, offering comfort and sex-appeal. Awarded French blogger Garance Doré is often running from show to show in these stylish flats. In terms of bags, ladies happily invest on the iconic Rockstud Tote, which is manufactured in Italy by a group of five skilled artisans. For all the styles, the eye-catching pyramid studs are hand-applied, hence their salty price tag. It’s indeed an investment.
Rockstud 1973 Collection
Valentino Rockstud shoes and bags come in an increasing number of versions, color combos and shades. One of the most memorable was the ‘1973 collection’ referencing the chevron print of a runway piece back in 1973. It is also known as ‘Rainbow’ collection, due to its stunning mix of bold stripes. It belonged to Cruise 2015 collection expressing a cheery 70s mood. These pieces, as many other special editions (e.g. Psychedelic Rockstud Camo), are highly collectible.
